Over the past 50 years, in an effort to better prepare society for the challenges to come, educators have been been crafting visions that challenge traditional models of learning and the physical space that supports them. But visions are not enough. From 20-22 September 2010, Vienna will host an international conference IMAGINE! Exploring radical visions for tomorrow's schools ... and how to make them work. It is being organised by the OECD Centre for Effective Learning Environments (CELE), in co-operation with the Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture, Austria and the Vienna University of Technology, and with the participation of the OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI). The conference will explore how innovative design solutions and financing and procurement strategies can address current and future challenges in educational policy and practice. It will also be informed by reflection on different major trends influencing education and scenarios for the future. The conference will feature keynote speakers and panel discussions involving visionaries, change agents, policy makers, architects and planners; hands-on creative workshops; visits to educational facilities in the Vienna area; and a poster exhibition on “Visions for tomorrow’s schools

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW
----------------------------------------------------------------------------CISSE 2009 provides a virtual forum for presentation and discussion of the
state-of the-art research on computers, information and systems sciences and
engineering. CISSE 2009 is the fifth conference of the CISSE series of
e-conferences. CISSE is the World's first Engineering/Computing and Systems
Research E-Conference. CISSE 2005 was the first high-caliber Research
Conference in the world to be completely conducted online in real-time via
the internet. CISSE 2005 received 255 research paper submissions and the
final program included 140 accepted papers, from more than 45 countries.
CISSE 2006 received 691 research paper submissions and the final program
included 390 accepted papers, from more than 70 countries. CISSE 2007
received 750 research paper submissions and the final program included 406
accepted papers, from more than 80 countries. A total of 948 paper
submissions were received for CISSE 2008 and the final program included
382 accepted papers, from more than 80 countries.
The virtual conference will be conducted through the Internet using
web-conferencing tools, made available by the conference. Authors will be
presenting their PowerPoint, audio or video presentations using
web-conferencing tools without the need for travel. Conference sessions
will be broadcast to all the conference participants, where session
participants can interact with the presenter during the presentation and
(or) during the Q&A slot that follows the presentation. This international
conference will be held entirely on-line. The accepted and presented papers
will be made available and sent to the authors after the conference both on
a DVD (including all papers, powerpoint presentations and audio
presentations) and as a book publication. Springer, the official publisher
for CISSE, published the 2005 proceedings in 2 books and the CISSE 2006,
CISSE 2007 and CISSE 2008 proceedings in four books each.
Conference participants - authors, presenters and attendees - only need an
internet connection and sound available on their computers in order to be
able to contribute and participate in this international ground-breaking
conference. The on-line structure of this high-quality event will allow
academic professionals and industry participants to contribute their work
and attend world-class technical presentations based on rigorously refereed
submissions, live, without the need for investing significant travel funds
or time out of the office.
The concept and format of CISSE is ground-breaking. The PowerPoint
presentations, final paper manuscripts and time schedule for live
presentations over the web had been available for weeks prior to the start
of the conference for all registrants, so that the participants can choose
the presentations they want to attend and think about questions that they
might want to ask. The live audio presentations were also recorded and are
part of the permanent CISSE on-line archive - accessible to all
registrants- which also includes all the papers, PowerPoint and audio
presentations.
Potential non-author conference attendees who cannot make the on-line
conference dates are encouraged to register, as the entire joint
conferences will be archived for future viewing.
The CISSE conference audio room provides superb audio even over low speed
internet connections, the ability to display PowerPoint presentations, and
cross-platform compatibility (the conferencing software runs on Windows,
Mac, and any other operating system that supports Java). In addition, the
conferencing system allowed for an unlimited number of participants, which
in turn granted us the opportunity to allow all CISSE participants to
attend all presentations, as opposed to limiting the number of available
seats for each session.
Prospective authors are invited to submit full papers electronically in
Microsoft Word format through the website of the conference at
http://cisse2009online.org. Accepted papers must be presented in the virtual
conference by one of the authors. To submit your paper, please visit

Conferment of the Title of Honorary Professor
Effective Date: June 15, 2008
Approved by: Senate and the Board of Governors
The University will confer awards of the title of Honorary Professor to persons who have
achieved an outstanding record and reputation in their profession at the national or
international level to honor him/her for dedicated service to the University, as a teacher,
scholar, researcher, curator, sponsor (or any combination of these), he/she having attained
academic and/or professional distinction in those disciplines in which he/she has served
with excellence the University community. The title and rank carry no salary implications as to remuneration at all.
The above criteria are to be applied somewhat stringently so that the title retains its exclusive character as an honor of the University for dedicated service to the University.
Method of Appointment
Prima facie nominations for the title and rank of Honorary Professor must be made to the Promotions and Titles Committee concerned. All nominations must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae and statement of the reasons for the nomination. The committee examines the proposal and may, but need not, consult outside opinion. The vote upon the proposal must be unanimous.
If the committee decides to recommend the conferment of a title it specifies the period of the conferment. This period should normally be lifelong unless some shorter period is proposed and approved.
The President is empowered to give final approval to the recommendation.

March 2007: A rational scale for assessing the harm of drugs of misuse
In the UK, illicit drugs are regulated according to a classification system that aims to relate to the harms and risks of each drug. This system has evolved over nearly a century in an unsystematic way by a small group of experts, with the information available to them being varied in both quality and quantity. David Nutt and colleagues from the University of Bristol, UK, using an evidence-based approach assess the harms of various illicit drugs. Read moreINVITATION

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW
---------------------------------------------------------------------CISSE 2006 provides a virtual forum for presentation and discussion of the
state-of the-art research on computers, information and systems sciences
and engineering. CISSE 2006 is the second conference of the CISSE series of
e-conferences. CISSE 2005 was the World's first International
Engineering/Computing and Systems Research Online E-Conference. CISSE 2005
was the first high-caliber Research Conference in the world to be
completely conducted online in real-time via the internet. The CISSE 2006 virtual conference will be conducted through the Internet
using web-conferencing tools, made available by the conference. Authors
will be presenting their PowerPoint and audio presentations using very
simple web-conferencing tools without the need for travel. Conference
sessions will be broadcast to all the conference participants, where
session participants can interact with the presenter during the
presentation and (or) during the Q&A slot that follows the presentation.
This international conference will be held entirely on-line. The accepted
and presented papers will be made available after the conference both on a
CD and as a book publication. Springer, the official publisher for CISSE,
published the 2005 proceedings in 2 books.Book 1: http://www.cisse2006.org/flyer1.pdf
Book 2: http://www.cisse2006.org/flyer2.pdfConference participants - authors, presenters and attendees - only need an
internet connection and sound available on their computers in order to be
able to contribute and participate in this international ground-breaking
conference. The on-line structure of this high-quality event will allow
academic professionals and industry participants to contribute work and
attend world-class technical presentations based on rigorously refereed
submissions, live, without the need for investing significant travel funds
or time out of the office.Potential non-author conference attendees who cannot make the on-line
conference dates are encouraged to register, as the entire joint
conferences will be archived for future viewing.CISSE 2005 received 255 research paper submissions and the final program
included 140 accepted papers, from more than 45 countries. The concept and
format of CISSE 2005 were very exciting and ground-breaking. The PowerPoint
presentations, final paper manuscripts and time schedule for live
presentations over the web had been available for 3 weeks prior to the
start of the conference for all registrants, so they could choose the
presentations they want to attend and think about questions that they might
want to ask.The live audio presentations were also recorded and were part of the
permanent CISSE archive, which also included all power point presentations
and papers. The schedule and papers presented in CISSE 2005 is available
at:http://www.cisse2006.org/cisse2005.aspx
The CISSE conference audio room provided superb audio even over low speed
internet connections, the ability to display PowerPoint presentations, and
cross-platform compatibility (the conferencing software runs on Windows,
Mac, and any other operating system that supports Java). In addition, the
conferencing system allowed for an unlimited number of participants, which
in turn granted us the opportunity to allow all CISSE participants to
attend all presentations, as opposed to limiting the number of available
seats for each session.
CISSE 2006 is composed of the following four conferences:
International Conference on Industrial Electronics, Technology & Automation
(IETA 06): http://www.cisse2006.org/ieta.aspxInternational Conference on Telecommunications and Networking (TeNe 06):

Dr. Trevor J. Hawkeswood announces his new upcoming book:
Spiders of Australia: An Introduction to their Classification Biology and
Distributionby Dr Trevor J. Hawkeswood
North Richmond, Australia
This book introduces the Australian spider fauna and includes many species
that are well known to Australian biologists, naturalists, gardeners and
pest controllers, such as the infamous and deadly Red-back Spider
(Lactrodectus hasselti, Theridiidae) and the highly venomous Sydney
Funnel-web Spider, Atrax robustus (Hexathelidae). Spiders of Australia
provides for the first time information on a vast spectrum of the Australian
spider fauna and illustrates and describes over 150 species in some detail.
Many other species are mentioned and discussed and a thorough summary of
spider morphology, biology and classification is also provided. All
representative families are described in some detail and the numbers of each
family are listed on Australian and World levels. The families dealt with
in the book include the following: Desidae, Deinopidae, Uloboridae,
Pholcidae, Scytodidae, Lycosidae, Dysderidae, Oxyopidae, Zodariidae,
Clubionidae, Miturgidae, Corinnidae, Lamponidae, Gnaphosidae, Hersiliidae,
Salticidae, Sparassidae (= Heteropodidae), Thomisidae, Araneidae (=
Argiopidae), Tetragnathidae, Theridiidae, Barychelidae, Theraphosidae,
Actinopodidae, Dipluridae, Nemesiidae, Hexathelidae, Idiopidae and
Ctenizidae. Most of the major genera of each family are described and
representative species illustrated and described. Most of the spiders
illustrated are photographed alive in their natural settings while approx.
30 species are represented by paintings of living specimens. The
illustrations and descriptions make it easy for the layperson to identify
many common spiders and provides also for the first time, an up to date
reference list of hundreds of old and more recent scientific papers, books
and other articles on Australian and related spider species. This reference
list is organized into families and will prove to be an an indispensable
tool for serious workers on these Arachnida. Much of the information
provided for many of the species is new, based on the author’s own field
observations. This book is aimed for the scientist, naturalist, student and
layperson both in Australia and overseas and is written in any easy read
style with high level scientific jargon kept to a minimum. The book deals
with more species in detail than any other book presently available on
Australian spiders and information on the various species is summarised from
published literature and the authors personal observations in most cases. A
further highlight of the book is the high standard of photography by 4
photographers, B. Coulson. T.J. Hawkeswood, C.J. Parker and M. Peterson,
with classy paintings by J.R. Turner, one of Australia’s leading wildlife
artists. In total there are 166 colour plates. The photography has been
achieved over a number of years in many areas of Australia. The book is written by Dr T.J. Hawkeswood, a well-known entomologist and
botanist from New South Wales, Australia, who has travelled the globe
studying insects, plants, ancient civilizations, fossils etc. and more
recently, Russian modern history, and has written over 270 scientific papers
and other articles in biological and natural history journals throughout the
world and particularly in Europe. In addition to these scientific papers,
Hawkeswood has published two books, these being, Beetles of Australia (Angus
& Robertson, Sydney, Australia, 1987) and Host Plants of Chrysomelidae of
the World: An Essay about the Relationships between the leaf-beetles and
their food-plants (Backhuys Publishers, Leiden, The Netherlands, 1995), the
latter with the famous French entomologist and all round biologist, Dr. P.H.
Jolivet. All of the published information of T.J. Hawkeswood relating to
spiders is referenced in the present book.

Notes on Belionota prasina (Thunberg, 1789) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) from
Cebu Island, central Philippines, South-east Asia*Dr Trevor J. Hawkeswood
270 Terrace Road, North Richmond, New South Wales, 2754, Australia.
Hawkeswood, T.J. (2002). Notes on Belionota prasina (Thunberg, 1789)
(Coleoptera: Buprestidae) from Cebu Island, central Philippines, South-east
Asia. Spilopyra, 2: 1-3.Abstract. Three larval host plants and observations made during June 1986 on
the flight/escape behaviour of adults of the tropical jewel beetle,
Belionota prasina (Thunberg, 1789) are recorded from Cebu Island, central
Philippines, South-east Asia. The larval host plants are Mangifera indica L.
(Sapindaceae)(new), Delonix regia (Boj. ex Raf.) Hooker
(Caesalpiniaceae)(new) and Ceiba pentandra (L.) Gaertn.
(Bombacaceae)(verified).Introduction
Belionota prasina (Thunberg, 1789)(Coleoptera: Buprestidae) is a
medium-sized jewel beetle recorded from India to Indochina, China, Taiwan,
Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, Indonesia, Borneo and Maluku to northern
Australia (Thunberg, 1789; Thèry, 1929; Bellamy, 1991; Weng-Yew Tung, 1983).
The adult beetle measures 22-25 mm long (males are usually slightly smaller
than the females) and the head and pronotum is dark metallic greenish in
colour. The pronotum also has a distinctive metallic ruby red to maroon
patch on the latero-apical margin and the elytra are greenish blue-black. A
colour illustration of the adult has been provided by Weng-Yew Tung (1983).
Field observations on adults and on three larval host plants were undertaken
near the township of Malubog, Cebu Island, central Philippines during June
1986 and are recorded here for the first time.Observations
During June 1986, a number of Belionota prasina were observed flying rapidly
in the air and around certain partially dead, dead or dying trees of Delonix
regia (Boj. ex Raf.) Hooker (Caesalpiniaceae) and Ceiba pentandra (L.)
Gaertn. (Bombacaceae). They deftly landed on the trunks at various heights
above ground level (1.5-5 metres), usually head facing downwards. The
beetles were then very active, walking rapidly with interrupted jerky
movements over the trunks and all of a sudden moving to the other side of
the trunk if approached or disturbed. If approached within a few feet, they
flew off away from the resting position in a very rapid motion. Beetles
often returned to the tree within a short period of time. A number of
specimens were collected by knocking them down to the ground with a stick or
more successfully by capturing then from behind with fingers or net as they
slowly moved in a reverse manner in response to an object being placed
towards or near their heads. Over a period of 6 days, 10 specimens were
collected, but in most capture attempts, beetles eluded capture by their
alertness and fast exit from the trunks and branches of the host trees.
Examination of the dead trunks and fallen branches of the two tree species
indicated a number of semi-circular shaped bore (exit) holes measuring 8-9
mm long by 5-6 mm wide at various heights along the trunks and thicker
branches. Examination of these bore holes revealed two adults which had died
during the course of their exiting from the trunks of the trees (both
species). As is often the case with these types of wood boring beetles, it
was evident they had either had trouble during the exiting process and had
subsequently become stuck or that they were attacked by parasites while in
the pupa/adult stage before emergence. Further away from Malubog, I found a
partially dead tree of Mangifera indica L. (Sapindaceae) which indicated
numerous bore holes of buprestids and other borers (e.g. weevils). The exit
holes in some areas on the trunks and larger branches matched those of B.
prasina on Delonix regia and Ceiba pentandra and this plant is undoubtedly
also a host for this buprestid although I was not able to find any dead
beetles in the wood.Discussion
Belionota prasina (Thunberg, 1789) is a widespread beetle but little appears
to have been written on its biology and behaviour. Despite it being common
in South-east Asia and is often offered for sale by collectors and insect
companies and/or on the Internet, very little is known about its
distribution and habits. The ability of this beetle in the adult stage to
fly rapidly and to land expertly on the trunks of vertical standing trees
was evidenced by my observations on Cebu Island. The phenomenon of actively
moving backwards around a tree trunk while observing an intruder or
potential predator has been observed in other buprestids (Hawkeswood, 1978).
Thanatosis is often employed by several species within the related
Australian buprestid fauna (e.g. Hawkeswood, 1978, 1981, 1987) but was not
observed in this very active, high-flying species. When knocked to the
ground, most beetles tried to take flight immediately without displaying
death feign.Weng-Yew Tung (1983) noted that in Malaysia, the species is a very common
beetle, frequently observed on the bark of Kapok (Ceiba pentandra,
Bombacaceae) and Casuarina trees (Casuarina sp., Casuarinaceae). These
comments may indicate that the beetle breeds in these species because of the
inference of egg-laying in the bark. However, my field records noted above
indicate that Ceiba pentandra is indeed a larval host plant, although I made
no observations on any Casuarina species. Casuarina may or may not prove to
be a larval host. It appears from my data that in the Malubog area at least,
B. prasina breeds in three species of tropical trees: Ceiba pentandra
(Bombacaceae), Mangifera indica (Sapindaceae) and Delonix regia
(Caesalpiniaceae).Ceiba pentandra is the Kapok tree, which grows to heights of over 60 metres
(200 feet). They are large deciduous trees with heavily buttressed spiny
trunks. C. pentandra is the tallest tree in Africa where it is endemic; it
also occurs wild in South America but in South-east Asia, it is considered
introduced there, having been planted for kapok production. Mangifera indica
(Sapindaceae) is the Mango which is widely distributed and grown for its
delicious fruits in South-east Asia and now introduced to many tropical and
subtropical areas of the world. It is a tree growing to about 25 metres
high. Delonix regia (Caesalpiniaceae), commonly known as the Poinciana tree,
is a native of Madagascar off Africa and grows to about 12 metres high. It
is mainly planted as a shade tree and for its beautiful red flowers in other
tropical and subtropical areas of the world and is thus another introduced
plant species to the Philippines. None of the above mentioned three plant
species are closely related to each other botanically and at least two of
them are definite introductions to the Philippines. It appears that the
widely distributed B. prasina is a prominent buprestid in the Malubog area,
Cebu and has adapted to feeding on dead wood of a broad range of host tree
species. It is interesting to note that large tropical trees and not shrubs
or smaller trees appear to be the preferred hosts for this buprestid,
despite it being only a medium-sized buprestid. No doubt further careful
field observations throughout its range will reveal additional tree hosts
for B. prasina.Acknowledgements
