European Atlas
The fifteen maps on this page are interactive pictures worth millions of the words spilling out to explain current
events in the Balkans. There is a map here for each of the fifteen centuries from 001-1400 AD. The first maps
display the dominance of the Roman Empire. Later maps follow the division of the empire, the movements of
many peoples, and the development of Western Europe. Especially pertinent today are the dramatic changes in
the Balkans over the millennium-and-a-half represented. A student can follow changes by moving from
map-to-map, placing the cursor over the Balkans and clicking to enlarge that section of Europe. Whether the
study is by general overview, or tracking in rich detail, the background of Balkan instability comes into full
perspective.
